SSCNET has been upgraded to a new high-performance remote access server which is available all to Social Science network users through either a web browser or the Remote Desktop Connection command in the Windows Start menu. The new server offers remote access to most statistical, data analysis, and document preparation applications available on the SSC Network including: SPSS 15, Matlab, Gauss, NVivo, Lisrel, Maple, Amos, MikTeX, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Professional 8, Microsoft Office 2007 and WordPerfect Office 12. These applications are also useful to notebook, wireless and remote users who do not have the software they need on their own computers.

A remote desktop client also exists for Macintosh users which allows anyone with a Mac to run Windows software such as SPSS, WordPerfect, MMS and ScanExam.

SSCNET and SSCNET2 serve individuals who need high-powered processors to run their analyses or to connect to the SSC Network from remote locations. This new robust server features dual, quad-core XEON 3.6GHz processors, 800MHz front side bus, and 4GB ECC RAM.

To access SSCNET using the Remote Desktop Connection client (recommended), connect to sscnet.uwo.ca. To use the web browser interface, enter sscnet.uwo.ca in the address field of the browser and select the desired remote access server (sscnet.uwo.ca or sscnet2.uwo.ca) from the drop-down list. The Remote Desktop Connection client provides the ability to access your local disk drives and printers from programs running on the servers. For example, you can use SPSS on the Remote Access Server to analyze data stored on your local machine, or you can copy files between your H: drive on the SSC Network and your local hard drive. In addition, the client allows you to print directly to your local printer from applications running on the server provided a driver for your printer exists on the server.

Complete information about the SSCNET and SSCNET2 services is available in our Remote Access Service Help Note (ssts.uwo.ca/helpnotes/remoteaccessservice.asp).
