SSC Network Update

Line Printing Service Ends April 30, 1998

Douglas Link

The draft quality printing service, which has been provided free in the SSCL for many years, will be taken out of service April 30, 1998.  The CI-1000 line printer is well beyond its serviceable life, and budget circumstances prevent its replacement.  Experience over the past two years has also shown that free printing is open to considerable abuse; users have printed large volumes of non-academic material such as Internet recreational and game related information, e.g. hundreds of pages of chess moves.

SSCL will provide users with hands-on access to a laser printer controlled by a VendaCard reader that will debit printing costs from a standard UWO Copy Centres Debit Card.  The printer will be located in SSC 1030.  This location has the advantage of providing users with access to laser printer output during extended hours of operation, something that the current SSC Copy Centre arrangement cannot provide.  Another advantage is that users will have direct physical control over what and when they print, avoiding waste and lost output picked up by other users.

SSCL regrets that print charging must be instituted across the board but we are investigating the possibility of offsetting the cost by using student levy funds and operating funds to lower the cost per page for laser quality output from 15 cents to perhaps 5 cents.

Please note that the draft printer in the SSCL Graduate Workroom  (SSC 1040) will still be supported.
