SSC Network Update

UWO Centralized E-mail Services

Douglas Link

Also effective May 1, 1998, all new social science user accounts will have their E-mail services based on the UWO centralized E-mail server.  This means that new social science E-mail addresses will no longer refer to @ssc.uwo.ca but to the central UWO mail site @julian.uwo.ca.  All social science undergraduate students and many other social science users have already made this transition and we encourage faculty, staff and graduate students to move by December 31, 1998.

To obtain a Julian E-mail address, you simply request a free personal computer account from ITS by presenting your valid Western ID card at the ITS Front Counter, 2nd Floor, Natural Science Centre.  The account also provides 5MB of disk space and the ability to create personal WWW pages.

Because the changing of one’s long standing E-mail address is onerous at best, we recommend that you allow considerable time for the move.  First, open an ITS E-mail account as soon as possible; secondly, request automatic forwarding of your present SSCL E-mail to your new UWO mail address.  To request automatic forwarding, simply send an E-mail message to setforward@ssc.uwo.ca and specify your new E-mail address.  You should also notify your correspondents of the change in your E-mail address.

SSCL is preparing a Help Note to assist VAX users with their migration to the Julian E-mail server.  This document will be ready in early February.  In the meantime, please see the consultant in SSC 1004 for assistance.

Netscape Mail
When you proceed with changing your E-mail address location, it might also be a good time to consider moving to the University’s recommended mailer using Netscape 4 Messenger.  The integration of commonly used desktop tools that include an E-mail and news client, web publisher and calendar into Netscape eliminates the need to be familiar with different standalone packages.

Netscape 4 is currently supported on the SSC Network via Windows 95.  For assistance converting to Netscape for your E-mail needs, or reconfiguring Netscape to use Julian, please contact Eric Cartman at ext. 5059.  Training for Netscape Messenger is offered by ITS.  See the Western News for class times.
