Moved to XP? Recover H: Drive Space by Deleting Obsolete Files

Les Flodrowski

Anyone who previously used Windows 95, 98 or ME, but who has now upgraded to Windows 2000 or XP can delete certain profile folders from their H: drive. Doing so will help clean up unnecessary files and provide you with additional space for other applications.

The following folders and files can be deleted if you only use Windows 2000/XP:

  • H:\Application Data
  • H:\Cookies
  • H:\Shortcuts
  • H:\user.dat

Windows 2000/XP has similarly named folders that are created in your Documents and Settings profile folder located on the C: drive.

In addition to the folders listed above, users who no longer use Netscape E-mail, can delete the folders:

  • H:\Netscape
  • H:\NetSave
