SSC Network Update

Web-based Data and Information Services

Vincent Gray and Eric Cartman

SSCL is offering more of its services via the World Wide Web.  The Data, Information and Library Services link on the SSC home page provides access to many web-based services.  Recent additions and/or changes include the following:

The Internet Data Library System (IDLS)
IDLS is a web-based interface for retrieving data from the Network Data Library System. IDLS has been changed to allow you to receive data directly back to your desktop computer, whether at home or on campus. Additionally, you no longer need to obtain a password for the files you want to use.  If you are an authorized user of the system (i.e., have an account on a university computer), you are eligible to retrieve data without impediment. The URL for IDLS is ssts.uwo.ca/ssnds/drl.html.

SSCL has subscribed to the University of Toronto's CANSIM service, a web-based interface for retrieving data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management System. This system contains regularly updated data, as opposed to the once-a-  year CD-ROM previously received by SSCL. Again, the system is also usable from either home or on campus. The URL for the CANSIM service is www.epas.utoronto.ca:5680/cansim.

CD-ROM Databases and Information
Some CD-ROM databases previously accessible through the Pathworks network are also available through Windows 95. These include EconLit, the International Financial Statistics database, POPLINE, PsychLIT, and sociofile. From the Windows 95 Start menu click: SSC Network Þ Data and Libraries Þ desired database.

Additionally, the Econlit, sociofile and PsychLIT databases are now accessible through the Web via URL ssts.uwo.ca/cgi-bin/cdroms.cgi.  Note that upon completing a session, you must click on the logout button.

University Library System
The University Library System is also providing many more internet-based services.  To access these services connect to telnet://libnet.lib.uwo.ca from your web browser (or telnet to the site). Enter libnet, then library. If you then type in your surname and ID number, you will have access to many web-based services provided by the library system. If you simply hit the Enter key, you will have access to only the library catalogue.  Alternatively, the library catalogue can be accessed via the URL 129.100.2.19.
