SSC Network Update

Pathworks (DOS and Windows 3.1) Wind-down

Douglas Link

One year ago Windows 95 was launched on the SSC Network. Since then migration away from the Faculty’s VAX-based Pathworks network, supporting DOS and Windows 3.1 has been progressing quickly.  Presently, all undergraduate computing has been converted, and many faculty, staff and graduate students have upgraded to Windows 95 or Windows NT.

SSCL is working towards the wind-down of the VAX-based Pathworks network by April 30, 1998.  There are financial advantages to the Faculty if this can be accomplished in conjunction with the start of the new budget year by eliminating the need to renew hardware and software maintenance agreements.

Remaining Pathworks users are encouraged to make their transition to Windows 95 or Windows NT by April 1998.  We hope to make the transition as smooth as possible and fully appreciate that, for some individuals and departments, this change is not without cost or relearning.  Please contact Steve Rumas (3599) to discuss hardware and connection issues, and Peter Fewster (5069) to discuss training issues.
