GradeScope

Gradescope can be used for administering and marking in class quizzes, assignments and final exams. Unlike ScanExam, it isn't just for multiple choice exams. Western has a license for Gradescope and it can be integrated with your courses in OWL. SSTS will start an examination scanning service for Gradescope in the Fall of 2021. Gradescope recently hosted a demonstration for Social Science which you can view below.

  • Exam/Assignment Uploads: Paper assignments can be scanned to PDFs and uploaded. Students can also submit their work directly to Gradescope by using their cell phones to scan to PDF.
  • Grading Online: Exams are uploaded to Gradescope. You can even have multiple graders grading at the same time.
  • Consistent Grading: Build comments into your grading scheme and apply grades equally across students. You can mark one question for all students at the same time and if you change a grading points mid-stream, all exams are adjusted accordingly.

Gradescope integration with OWL

  • Instructors now have the option of having a Gradescope integration added to their OWL sites
  • Once added to an OWL site:
    • Instructors and students will be able to access Gradescope through OWL
    • There is no need for students to create a separate Gradescope account or log in through a separate page
    • The OWL class roster will be synchronized between the OWL course site and Gradescope
  • Currently, grades cannot be automatically synchronized between Gradescope and OWL
    • For the Fall term, instructors will need to continue exporting grades from Gradescope and importing them into the OWL Gradebook
    • WTS is working on grade synchronization and have indicated it may be available in the Winter term
  • Instructors who wish to have Gradescope added to their OWL site must request it through the WTS Helpdesk
