SSC Network Update

Changes to SSC Dial-in Services

In early February, the SSC Network PPP dial-in service was launched to provide Social Science users with remote Internet access. Unlike pcANYWHERE, PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) provides full Internet accessibility from your home computer over a phone line. Using this connection method, you can utilize Internet tools such as World Wide Web browsers (e.g. Netscape, Internet Exporer), E-mail (e.g. PINE, Eudora) and file transfer (e.g. FTP) directly from a remote PC. This article describes upcoming changes that all dial-in users should be aware of.

Migration From pcANYWHERE To PPP Dial-in Services
For strictly Internet access, the PPP service is superior to pcANYWHERE. Since most pcANYWHERE callers are primarily using E-mail and Web services, SSCL will be migrating to PPP as the preferred dial-in service offering. Beginning in May, the dial-in facilities will be reconfigured as follows:

  1. PPP service via 850-2324 (26 lines)

  2. This service will be available to all Social Science users.

Effective May 1, the PPP service will only accept Windows 95/NT usernames and passwords – your VAX/Pathworks password will no longer work.

Applications for Windows 95 accounts are available from the SSCL Main Office, SSC Room 1228.

  3. pcANYWHERE via 661-2155 (4 lines)

  4. This service will only be available to faculty, staff and graduate students using a VAX/Pathworks account.

  5. pcANYWHERE via 661-2156 (2 lines)

  6. This service also supports access via Kermit and will be restricted to use by faculty, staff and graduate students using a VAX/Pathworks account.
