Your Home Drive on the SSC Network

Liz Hill

Users of the Social Science Network have the ability to take advantage of shared network resources such as file storage areas, or disk space on network servers where they can safely store their files (e.g. word documents, excel spreadsheets, PDF files, presentations).

Safe on Home

In the SSC Network environment the personal file storage area that each user has automatically allocated to them appears on their computer as their H: drive. The H: drive, which is referred to as the HOME drive, is visible to users when they are connected to or logged into the network via any computer. This is a recommended area where personal files can be stored.

To save a file to your H: drive, choose File > Save As then, by selecting the drop down arrow to the right, you will see the drive letters representing disk storage areas that are available to you (e.g., A:, C:, D:, including your H: drive. If you have never used your H: drive before, you might want to observe its properties which has the following format:

username$ on ‘Staff/Student Server (server name)’ (H:)

The H: drive goes to an area on a server that is for your use only, and to which only you have access while logged onto the network. Network resources including your H: drive are backed up nightly. Files that have been stored on the H: drive are retained for two months and can be recovered if accidentally deleted or modified.

Assistance with file storage and network resources is available in our department. Queries can be directed to ssnds-help@uwo.ca or at the Help Desk in Room 1012.
