Map a drive to the Server
Social Science Web Services are located on our Delta server. The purpose of having a drive mapped to the live server location of your site is to clean up the files and folders that Cascade sometimes leaves behind. If you don't have a drive on your system mapped to the live location of your web site on the server, please contact SSTS or use the information below to map a drive.

Drive Mapping
A web site can be mapped to a drive letter using the drive mapping path listed in the table above.
Drive Mapping by Web Masters
Departmental web masters should map a drive as follows:
- Open File Explorer
- Right-click on This PC
- Choose Map Network Drive...
- Select a Drive: letter (usually I: for Internet)
- For Folder: Enter the Drive Mapping for your department from the table above
- Make sure to check Reconnect at logon
SFTP Access
It is possible to use SFTP to transfer files to a web site or folder. If you require SFTP access to your web folder, please contact SSTS to have that access setup.
Most web sites are edited using the Western templates within the Cascade content management system. To access an existing Cascade site or request a new Cascade site, please make a ticket with SSTS.
If you already have Cascade access, you can edit your site by going to cms.uwo.ca. Help with the Cascade system is available online. Communications also has a lot of information on their web site for working with the Cascade templates.
Structural Tips
- Generally only six menus fit in your main menu unless the headings are short. You do not want your menu headings to wrap because they display below the purple bar and are not visible. If you need to have more than six menus, you should consult with the Cascade team at WTS.
- Images and PDFs should be kept in separate folders titled accordingly like img and docs. You can create subfolders in these to match your other folder structure (e.g., img/about).
- Every navigation folder must have a navigation index page, also known as a landing page. A navigation folder is essentially every folder that contains html pages. The index page is what makes the links in the breadcrumb trail at the top of each page work. It also makes it so that if you type sitename.uwo.ca or sitename.uwo.ca/about, your browser loads sitename.uwo.ca/index.html or sitename.uwo.ca/about/index.html instead of giving you a 404-File not found error.
- Whenever you create a new page, pay close attention to the check boxes at the top of the page for inclusion in top and side navigation. This is a common cause of problems when creating new pages.
If you would like to see what your pages look like on the web site without actually publishing them to your live site, you have two options:
- Full Preview in Cascade:
- After saving and submitting your changes, click on the ...More option in the top right corner and choose Full Screen Preview.
- This will open your page in a new tab on your browser. This is a good way to view a single page, but you must remember that you are still viewing it in Cascade. If you click on any internal links you will be in the regular Cascade view.
- Simply click the X to close this tab and return to the regular Cascade view.
- Publish to a CascadeTest folder:
- After saving and submitting your changes, click on Publish and View Publish Settings.
- You will see a publish option checked that is either Prod_site or Production_site. Uncheck that option and check the Test_site option instead and then click Publish.
- This will pubish to your sitename.uwo.ca/cascadetest/folder/subfolder.
- When you go to the CascadeTest URL you will be prompted to login with your Western credentials.
- It can be difficult to find your page as it is now in a subfolder of your site. If the normal URL is sitename.uwo.ca/about_us/location/floorplan.html then the test URL is sitename.uwo.ca/cascadetest/about_us/location/floorplan.html.
- It might be easier to publish your main index page, your about_us index page, and the location folder to the Test_site so you can simply browse to it from sitename.uwo.ca/cascadetest.
If your site has migrated to Cascade, you will have a search tool at the top of your pages that use the Google search tool to search your site. The search tool on the main SSC web site will search all Social Science web sites using the Google search tool.
AWStats is an Open Source program that accesses the log files generated by our web server and displays them in a useful and organized format. Web masters can find the AWStats for their department at:
department.uwo.ca/awstats
Login with your SSC Network username and password. The AWStats is accessible only to the members of your Web authoring team. The AWStats are updated nightly and viewable for any month since inception.
Understanding the Report
- Unique Visitors. Uniqueness is measured by accesses from a unique IP #.
- Number of Visits. This is the number of visits made to your site.
- Pages. The number of actual pages visited.
- Hits. Each page visited plus each of the graphic files called from within a page are called Hits. This is an inflated value.
- Bandwidth. This is the total amount of data sent out which includes all images and text sent to the visitor’s browser.
Full List. Anytime you see the words Full List you can click on them to see the complete listing for the month.
Robots and Spiders
Robots and Spiders are automated programs that enter websites and follow internal links to all pages of the site to index websites for search engines like Google.
Pages-URL
Click on the Full List link under Pages-URL. To see a specific page, enter part or all of the file name in the Filter: field and click on OK.
Browsers
The logs record the browsers that people are using to view your pages. You might want to consider testing your web pages with some of these browsers.
Connect to Site From
Go to these links to see how pages are linking to your site. You may find some old links that need to be corrected.
Search Key Phrases and Keywords
What key phrases and keywords are directing users to your website? This is useful information for modifying your site. You can adjust your content for the kind of things that people are searching for.
HTTP Status Codes
The 404 Status Code is triggered when a page cannot be found. The 404 is linkable. This gives you an idea of what pages or links are not working properly on your website so you can fix them.
