Cabling Upgrades and Wireless Service in the SSC Building
Steve Rumas
Telecommunications is currently upgrading all old Category 3 network circuits in the Social Science building to new Category 6 cabling which is capable of higher speed. This is a large task that will take place over the next few months. During this time, the new cables will be run to offices and rooms that have Category 3 network circuits at no charge to users. Note that requests for new circuits that did not exist before, will still incur an installation charge from Telecommunications.
As Telecommunications moves through the building doing the wiring upgrades, they will also install wireless access points which will provide wireless 802.11b/g (54Mbps) network service in the Social Science building. All 802.11b (11MBps) wireless access points that existed before this current upgrade have been converted to the new 802.11b/g standard. The plan is to have wireless service available in all areas of the Social Science building when this project is completed.
