SSC Network Update

24-hour Card Swipe Access to SSC

Steve Rumas

card swipeUsing funding provided by last year’s Social Science student levy fund, 24-hour, 7-day-a-week access to the Social Science Building has been implemented. Two doors have been modified to provide card swipe access using an undergraduate, graduate, staff or faculty card, with the restriction that the owner must have a valid username on the Social Science Network. Once inside, the card can also be used to gain access to the Social Science Computing Laboratory’s 24-hour computing rooms (SSC 1000 and SSC 1032 available to all Social Science Network users; SSC 1038 to faculty/staff and graduate students only).

Both modified doors are on the second floor of the Social Science Building and have provisions for wheelchair access. One door is closest to the wheelchair ramp (of the 5 doors at the front of the building) with the swipe reader adjacent to the door. The other is furthest from the elevators, at the back of the building, and opens onto the ramp to the parking lot. The card swipe reader for the rear door is located next to the wheelchair access button, on the ramp outside the door.

To gain entry, swipe the card with the magstripe to the right and closest to the reader. Then simply pull the handle on the rightmost door and enter. If wheelchair access is required, press the button after swiping the card and the door will open automatically.

Make sure the door closes or an alarm will be triggered. If the light on the card swipe reader turns from green to red (not orange), after a swipe, the user’s card is probably damaged - try it at the other door to confirm. Problems with entry should be reported to the Social Science Computing Laboratory (SSC, Room 1228, Phone 661-2152).
