SSC Network Update
Remote Access Server—New Features Ali Hammoud Over the summer, the SSC Remote Access Server was upgraded to Windows 2003. Besides increasing efficiency, the upgrade provides remote users with several new features. Perhaps the most important is the ability to further access local disk drives and printers from programs running on the server. For example, you can use SPSS on the Remote Access Server to analyze data stored on your local machine, or you can also copy files between your H: drive on the SSC Network and your local hard drive. In addition, you can print directly to your local printer from applications running on the server. To get the greatest benefit from these new features, your computer should be running a newer Remote Desktop Client, which you can download from: ftp://ftp.ssc.uwo.ca/sscl/remotedesktop/msrdpcli.exe. In addition to the features described above, the client allows you to specify your connection type (e.g., LAN, Broadband, or Modem) and will automatically adjust its settings to optimize performance. It also allows you to direct sounds from the server to your computer when using high-speed connections. For more details about this service please read the Remote Access Service Help Note and the article New Remote Access Service in the February 2002 issue of the SSC Network Update.
