SSC Network Update

Windows XP Professional Support

Les Flodrowski

In addition to support for Windows 2000 Professional, we are now pleased to offer support for Windows XP Professional Edition on new hardware installations ordered in single units. If you plan to purchase a new computer, we suggest that you have Windows XP Professional installed instead of an older version of Windows. Note that Windows XP "Home" Edition has built-in limitations and cannot be run on the SSC Network. Also, installation of pre-configured Windows XP images across multiple PCs is not yet supported pending availability of an upgrade to our image installation software.

This May we will begin deploying Windows XP Professional in the SSCL student computing labs. The schedule for deployment of XP Professional in these labs is:

May - Upgrade Graduate Computing Room (SSC 1038) to Pentium IV, 1.9 GHz workstations running Windows XP Professional.

July - September - Upgrade the Undergraduate Computing Rooms (SSC 1000, 1014, 1030, 1032, 1012) to Windows XP Professional.

Instructors are encouraged to become familiar with Windows XP prior to teaching in these rooms.
