Retiring Student SSCNet Access

by Heather Stevens

For many years our undergraduate students, graduate students, staff and faculty have been able to enjoy remote access from home to our two central SSCNET remote access servers. This gave Social Science clients access to SSC Network software and services from any Internet location whether it was from home, from a computer elsewhere on campus, or from a non-Windows based computer such as a Mac. Our two SSCNET remote access servers are now very old and we require a replacement solution for this service. In recent years, Information Technology Services (ITS) created a service for students called MyVLab.  MyVLab has recently been upgraded and we find it to be a very good central solution for our student population. The available applications on MyVLab include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • ArcGIS
  • Maple
  • MATLAB
  • SAS
  • Stata (Social Science Access Only)
  • IBM SPSS Statistics

Undergraduate student use of SSCNET and SSCNET2 will be terminated on February 18, 2014. Access termination dates for graduate students will be announced pending the availability of certain software packages on the MyVLab service. Students are encouraged to use the newly upgraded myvlab.uwo.ca. It is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac and requires the installation of a local client to your computer. Follow the instructions for your operating system under "Setup Instructions".

Please note that MyVLab will not be the replacement solution for faculty and staff. SSCNET and SSCNET2 will remain available to faculty and staff until a replacement solution is in place.
